Job Description

This position performs, directs and coordinates activities of staff engaged in credit investigations and delinquent account collections to minimize bad debt while maintaining effective working and customer relationships.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Investigates and verifies financial status and reputation of prospective customers applying for credit, preparing documents to substantiate findings, and determining rejection or approval of applications. (May delegate to and oversee direct reports in performing these tasks).
  • Establishes credit limitations on customer accounts and handles special credit arrangements and deviations from standard terms of payment. Establishes and updates customers’ credit activities.
  • Works closely with the Sales Team and department staff on the collection of accounts receivable, contacting customers for payment and resolving problems. Handles the collection on accounts.
  • Designs and implements process to improve cash flow and reduce receivables.
  • Audits delinquent accounts considered to be uncollectible to ensure maximum efforts have been taken before assigning bad debt status to an account. Writes off uncollectible accounts.
  • Reviews delinquent accounts with CFO for possible submittal to attorney or outside agency for collection; follows up with collection agencies through to resolution.
  • Compiles, analyzes, and distributes the Weekly Delinquent Report to management and DSR’s. Works closely with department staff, DSR’s and management to avoid and/or resolve credit and collection issues. Contacting customers when necessary.
  • Processes and reviews Credit Applications and inquiries.
  • Maintains responsibility and control for all cash on hand and balancing to the general ledger.
  • Establishes goals and objectives for the Credit Department; measuring and monitoring results; developing strategies to meet goals/objectives. Performs Employee Performance Evaluations on a yearly basis.
  • Files and maintains bankruptcy claims, as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position is accountable for upwards of $5M in accounts receivable.  Position typically works Monday-Friday; however, weekend work may be occasionally necessary. Complexity of the position involves analyzing account specifics and determining appropriate course of action along with DSRs and management.  Position typically experiences recurring work situations with occasional variations from the norm. The Credit Manager determines the department’s practices and procedures, and performs duties with little direct supervision. Decisions impact the amount of bad debt we acquire, which in turn impacts the company’s bottom-line.


Job Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance and three years of credit/collection related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrated leadership skills, and ability to build consensus, resolve conflict in a calm and professional manner, and provide excellent customer service. Must be detail-oriented and possess strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal, problem-solving and analytical skills.  Must have demonstrated ability to make sound decisions while working under pressure.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as credit applications and reports, contracts, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with sales staff, customers or employees of organization. Related skills include interpersonal, negotiation and conflict-resolution. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in the use of personal computer and accounting software, Excel, Word and Outlook software.
